We got up early and made the 2 hr drive to Vail, CO in time for the 4th of July Parade. A small town parades is the best, and Vail really knows how to do it right. Although we arrived just minutes before the start of the parade, we found a place to settle in right in front of the announcer, so we got to see all the performances, and the bands all played when they passed us.

These guys dunked their paddles into vats of water and splashed us liberally as they went by. It was our favorite part of the parade! |
After the parade was over we patronized a local Sushi & Pan-Asian restaurant, enjoying their airy deck overlooking the main business strip in Vail. Since there were thunderstorms predicted throughout Colorado for the afternoon and evening, we skipped town and headed to Moab, UT, hoping to catch the fireworks there in the evening.
We hit some rain along the way, but it was beautiful by the time we reached Moab. Apparently the rain chased us down here, though, because by 8pm we were having thunderstorms here in Moab, too. No fireworks for this gang. Bummer!
