Flying over the Andes

One of the great joys of living in Chile is that whenever you fly out of Santiago for any reason, you have a killer view of the Andes.  This time we were flying across the continent to Buenos Aires, so we got to cross the entire cordillera.  What a treat!   It's pretty astonishing how close the peaks look--the plane is at 30,000 ft as usual, but the peaks reach up well past the halfway point of that altitude.  They are so close it feels like you should be able to step off the wing of the airplane directly onto a glacier.
